What is an OTA Update?

An over-the-air update (OTA Update), also known as over-the-air programming, is an update to an embedded system that is delivered through a wireless network, such as Wi-Fi or a cellular network. These embedded systems include mobile phones, tablets, set-top boxes, cars and telecommunications equipment.

One of the key reasons why OTA is so important is the agility to keep devices secure. The ability for devices to receive updates without being physically plugged means that the manufacturer of the device or software that is being used can easily release updates at any frequency.
